Move nearly complete
So we're almost back up and running on the new server, the move was an absolute pain in the arse!
It took literally days to shift everything from the old server, the moblog folder being the worst culprit. I was/am stupid enough to just dump all the moblog images in one folder, which is now so big (~51,000 files) that it can't be listed over FTP, i've been wrestling with the server over a secure shell to try and migrate the content. Hopefully the moblogs should be up and running tomorrow.
The whole experience has made me realise that i could really do with rebuilding homeofmuppets from scratch, start with a blank canvas and do things right this time. As the site has grown over the last 6/7 years, it's evolved into a bloated beast, held together by hacks and duct-tape. It prohibits me actually developing the site due to the sheer mess within the code. Under the bonnet this site is horrendous, and actually an embarrasment to me now given that i'm employed as a professional designer/developer.
I'm also thinking of streamlining the featureset, so i have a couple of questions to pitch to you, the actual users and supporters of the site :)
I'm considering dropping the blogs section, and making the moblogs the primary focus of the site. From looking at how we use the blogs, it seems that the forum - if integrated better - would be a better medium for this kind of content.
So now's the time to speak up if you'd be really heartbroken to see the blogs go (the current blogs would be available through an archive of sorts)
So, whaddyathink? it won't be a quick process, but something needs to be done, lol.
